How Do You Know if Water Is Flowing Through Every Solar Panel?

A solar pool heating system can be running without water flowing evenly through every panel.

That matters because each collector needs proper circulation to transfer heat efficiently. If part of the array is not getting enough flow, your pool may heat more slowly than expected.

Here are a few simple ways to tell if the system is flowing properly.

Check the Pool Returns

When solar heating first turns on, you may see a brief burst of air or bubbles at the pool returns. That is usually normal as the system fills.

The bubbles should settle once water is circulating through the collectors.

If air continues for a long time, or the return flow seems weak or inconsistent, the system may not be filling correctly.

Listen for Gurgling

Some noise at startup is normal.

Persistent gurgling or sloshing can indicate trapped air or insufficient flow through the solar array.

That can be caused by low pump speed, a dirty filter, valve settings, or a plumbing issue.

Check Your Filter Pressure

It is normal for filter pressure to change slightly when water is redirected to rooftop solar panels.

A large increase or unexpected drop can point to a circulation problem.

Before assuming there is an issue with the panels themselves, check:

  • The pool filter
  • Pump basket
  • Skimmer baskets
  • Diverter valve
  • Pump speed

Make Sure the Solar Valve Is Fully Open

The diverter valve controls whether pool water travels through the solar collectors.

If it is partially closed or not positioned correctly, the panels may not receive enough water.

For automatic systems, make sure the actuator is moving the valve fully when solar heating turns on.

Variable-Speed Pumps May Need Adjustment

If you use a variable-speed pump, the RPM needs to be high enough to push water up to the solar panels and through the entire array.

A setting that works fine for regular filtration may not always be enough for rooftop solar heating.

There is no single RPM that works for every system. Roof height, plumbing length, panel layout, and pipe size all affect the amount of flow required.

Can You Tell by Feeling the Panels?

If your panels are installed somewhere that is safely accessible from the ground, temperature differences can sometimes reveal a flow issue.

Once water begins circulating, the panels should start transferring heat into the water.

If one panel stays noticeably hotter than the others, it may not be receiving the same amount of flow.

Never climb onto a roof just to check panel temperature.

How Do You Know Everything Is Working Properly?

A properly operating solar pool heating system should generally have:

  • Strong, consistent return flow
  • Startup air that clears quickly
  • Little or no ongoing gurgling
  • Normal filter pressure
  • Water circulating through the full array
  • Gradual pool heating during sunny conditions

You do not need extremely hot water coming back into the pool. Solar pool heating works by continuously circulating a large volume of water through the collectors throughout the day.
